When embarking on my fourth novel, I was at a loss as to what author or famous person to highlight, but my editor said, “It doesn’t have to be a person. It could be a something. A fictional something. Like perfume!”
Not being a fan of perfume, not a perfume wearer, I found this a bit of a stretch to interest me, but as I started my research into the perfume industry, and all the wealth and glamor that surrounds it, I found it fascinating. Originally titled Essence of My Desire by the publisher, which is the name of the perfume in the book, in re-releasing it in e-book and Audible formats, I reverted the title to what I had named it in the first place, A Scent of Magic.
Because although it’s about perfume, it’s also about white magic, a secret formula from the past, and a race between the heirs of two famous perfume families to obtain it. The Essence, of course, is a strong aphrodisiac and takes the wearer into a world of sensuous dreams. Whoever gains access to the secret formula, and the magical ingredient, will be the most famous and successful perfumer of all time.
